What You Will Find in this Semester
Throughout Semantics, we will move gradually from basic questions about meaning to more specific semantic relationships, concepts, and theories. The semester introduces topics such as lexical meaning, sense and reference, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, homonymy, polysemy, semantic fields, collocation, idioms, semantic features, semantic roles, truth conditions, ambiguity, entailment, presupposition, prototype theory, conceptual metaphor, cognitive semantics, and the relationship between semantics and pragmatics.
The topics are designed to help you do more than memorize terminology. You will encounter explanations followed by examples, comparisons, practical activities, and questions that encourage you to analyze language for yourself.
My hope is that, as you progress through Semantics, some of the questions that initially seem difficult will gradually become familiar for you.
